Joe Dafloe's Cafe Bar
Somewhere outside Washington D.C.
April 2002

The flame bobbed again as another waitress passed the table.

She was late.

He picked at his bread roll, crumbling the pieces onto the plate,
the scotch he had ordered sat on the table untouched and sweating.

7.40pm.

Ten minutes later than they had agreed.
Perhaps she didn't receive his message. Perhaps she did, and just
didn't want to come. Perhaps some doctor with big muscles and a
bigger bank balance had finally made her open her eyes to him and
what he was... He stopped himself.
Maybe a few years back, but not now. She'd be here if she could.

The music changed to a slow, breathy samba as the candle flame
flickered and a wisp of cold night air reached him.
He knew she would be in the doorway before he looked up.

He watched as a waiter approached her, saw her looking around
anxiously as she spoke. A split second later her searching gaze
found the small booth in the back he had asked to sit in.
Her eyes softened and she gave a hint of a smile at the sight of
him. It was enough to just about stop his heart.

She struggled with her coat as she approached the table.

'Sorry I'm late, I had trouble finding this place, Mulder'

He wanted to reach out and hold her so badly, but the table of the
booth stood between them. His knees banged against the dark wood as
he shifted, trying to get closer to her. In desperation, he
stretched out his arm across the tablecloth and to his relief her
slender fingers grasped at his offered hand.

'Your hands are cold' he whispered.

'They'll warm, I'm ok.' she played with his fingers, watching as she
laced them with hers. 'It was a long drive, I couldn't get a flight
at such short notice and I haven't driven for long distances since
you've been....' Her voice trailed off and she looked up to finally
meet his eyes.

'How long, Mulder?'

'What?'

'How long do we have?'

He squeezed her fingers and then brought their entwined hands to his
mouth. Moist lips infused warmth into her skin.

'How long do you have?' He murmured, making another sweep across her
knuckle '...because I was thinking another forty, maybe fifty
years...'

'What?'

'That is of course if you'll still have me' A lop-sided smile
appeared from behind their linked hands 'No more goodbyes, Scully.
Not if I can help it'

She opened her fingers, sliding them out from his grasp to touch his
face. 'Promise?'

'Cross my heart and hope to -'

Her fingers quickly slid down to his mouth.

'No - don't say it, don't even think it!'
She traced the smile that appeared, one manicured nail slipping
inside to tickle the tip of his tongue.

Mulder clutched her wrist, holding her hand in place as he closed
his full lips around the pad of her finger. The slow sucking of his
mouth made her move restlessly in her seat.

A quiet cough broke the mood, Mulder looking up to find a waiter at
the side of the table. Scully quickly removed her hand, studying the
tablecloth in embarrassment as Mulder grinned, seeing the blush
creep over her face.

'Are you ready to order or do you need some more time?'

Mulder smiled up at the young man, glancing at Scully as she lifted
the menu to cover her pink cheeks.

'I think we need some more time'

The waiter looked back and forth between the two of them, noting the
spark.

'OK, call me whenever you're ready, no problem'

'Thanks'

Mulder looked back at Scully her head still buried in the menu.

'Hey behind there... he's gone - it's safe to come out. Relatively,
anyways.' He pulled the menu down with one finger to see her
face. 'Oh, and by the way Scully... Next time you try
to go undercover behind one of those...' He took the menu from her,
silently turned it the right way up and gave it back. 'It also helps
when you're ordering'.

There was a moments silence and then Scully bit her lip. 'Mulder I..
perhaps we should forget about ordering and just..'

The blush returned.

'Exactly what are you implying?' His dead pan expression couldn't
hide his amusement.

'Sorry. I just though that you might like to take this somewhere
else.'

He smiled. 'Missed me, huh?'

'No!.. I mean yes. Yes.'

'Relax Scully. We have plenty of time. Let's have dinner, talk for a
while and then..' he raised his eyebrows suggestively. 'Besides, I
found a room in this cheesy motel down the street.'

'Cheesy?'

'Yeah, for old time's sake. And it has great cable'

'You planning on watching TV all night Mulder?'

'Well not ALL night. I'm sure I could be ..distracted.'

She picked up the menu. 'Let's order then. The sooner we eat, the
sooner I can distract you.'

He watched as she finished her dessert, loving the shape of her
mouth as it curved around the spoon. The need to touch her was
becoming unbearable.

'This was wonderful, Mulder. Thank you for talking me into staying.'

She folded her napkin and then raised her eyes to find him staring
at her, the candlelight reflecting in his warm eyes.

'What?'

'Missed a spot'

He leaned forward, beckoning her closer.

'Right here' He whispered, licking a smudge of chocolate on her
chin.

Her surprised gasp and the taste of her threatened to send him over
the edge. Inhaling her wine-sweet breath made him dizzy.

'Scully' he murmured against her mouth 'I think we need to get out
of here.'

Her small hand found his knee beneath the table and
squeezed. 'Distracted yet?'

His eyes closed for a moment. 'Scully I've been distracted for the
past nine years.'

She smiled. 'I'll get the check then.'
